Nestled in a lush jungle reserve in southern India, this 120-year-old estate is renowned for its exquisite coffee. Five Senses has worked directly with Veer Attikan Estate since 2012, cultivating a long-standing and trustworthy coffee alliance. Veer Attikan Estate is situated in the Biligiri Rangan Hills, a beautiful, mist-shrouded mountainous range that doubles as a nature reserve. Much of the natural jungle is preserved for shade cover and wildlife conservation. It’s not uncommon to see wildlife like elephants and bison roaming amongst the coffee trees. At 1500 MASL, the estate is one of the highest coffee-growing areas in India, enabling the refined yet rich specialty coffee it produces year after year. Expect bold rich flavours of weighty dark chocolate, brown spice caramel & cherry. 1500-1650 MASL S795, SLN 9 & Catimor Washed Additional Information Biligiri Rangan Hills, also known as Biligiris, is situated to the south of the Heritage City of Mysore. The name ‘White Hills’ is derived from the fact that the area is constantly enveloped in a hanging mist. The magnificent mountain range is home to the Attikan Estate, which is 120 years old and played a crucial role in the development of coffee production in the region. The pioneer responsible for transforming the shrubland into a ‘coffee belt’ at Attikan Estate was Mr Randolph Hayton Morris, who arrived in the Hills in 1888, ignoring those who discouraged him from pursuing his mission. Despite the objections of his critics, Mr Morris persisted in his efforts to cultivate the area, which was said to be home to dangerous wildlife and devoid of any human presence. Due to his unwavering dedication, determination, and bravery in standing by his beliefs, Attikan is now not only a premier producer of specialty coffee, but it is also beautifully connected to its natural surroundings, thanks to its proximity to a wildlife sanctuary. The name ‘Veer Attikan’ comes from the word ‘Veer’ which means valour, courage and strength—all the things exhibited by Mr Randolph Morris when turning shrubland into a ‘coffee belt’. Since 2012, Five Senses has worked directly with Veer Attikan Estate, cultivating a long-standing and trustworthy coffee alliance. The cupping performance from this estate has consistently redefined Indian cup profiles. Estate information Region: The estate is located in the richly bio-diverse Biligiri Rangan Hills, 120kms south of Mysore and 250kms from Bangalore, at the confluence of the Western and Eastern Ghats in the State of Karnataka. Acreage: The estate comprises 435 acres, of which 330 have been planted. The balance area is the wind belt area, roads, buildings etc. The estate is located in a valley. There are strong winds most of the year, so nearly 90 acres of the estate has been left covered in jungle trees to act as a wind barrier. Shade Trees: The estate is situated in dense forest which is rich in soil, fauna and flora. The main shade tree is the atti, which is the local name for fig, from which the estate gets its name. Other shade trees include the silver oak, Jack cedar and a variety of jungle trees specific to this location, each adding a distinct feature to the shade pattern of the estate. Animals: The estate is in the Biligiri Rangan Temple wild life sanctuary. Wild animals like elephants, bison, bears, and sambhars are regularly seen on the estate, tigers are also spotted now and then. Birds like the black eagle and kestrel are regular visitors. The estate has also been declared a tiger reserve. From: $19.00 1k
