Description

About This Single Origin  Kenya Kirinyaga Kii AB (Single Origin Filter) ROAST:  Filter Roast PROCESS: Washed REGION: Kirinyaga ELEVATION: 1600-1900 VARIETAL:  Batian, SL28, SL34, Ruiru11 CUP: Blackberry, Rhubarb,Brown Sugar Kii Factory is operated by Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society, located in Kenya’s renowned coffee-growing region of Kirinyaga. The factory serves around 1,215 active smallholder members, many of whom farm coffee on small plots of land alongside other crops. Coffee has been grown in this area since 1953, and today the average producer manages around 400 coffee trees on roughly one-third of a hectare. Rungeto F.C.S. operates three factories: Kii, Karimikui, and Kiangoi. The cooperative is managed by an elected board of seven members, with representation from each factory catchment area, and supported by a team of permanent staff led by a secretary manager. Through its partnership with Sustainable Management Services Limited, the cooperative continues to focus on improving both coffee quality and farm productivity, helping producers increase yield while maintaining the clarity and structure that Kenyan coffees are known for. At Kii, ripe cherries are delivered to the factory as soon as they are picked. They are then sorted before being depulped, then fermented — typically overnight — to break down the remaining mucilage. After fermentation, the coffee is washed with fresh river water and graded through washing channels, helping separate the beans by density and quality. The coffee is then dried slowly in full sun on raised beds. During drying, it is regularly turned and monitored to ensure even moisture development and to protect the coffee from harsh midday heat or unexpected rain. This careful processing helps preserve the clean acidity, juicy sweetness, and transparent flavour profile that make washed Kenyan coffees so distinctive. Kii is a classic example of Kenya’s cooperative coffee system: many small producers contributing carefully picked cherries to a central factory, where precise processing and strong quality control turn smallholder harvests into beautifully expressive coffees.
