Description

About This Single Origin  Kenya Nyeri Hill AB (Single Origin Filter) ROAST:  Filter Roast PROCESS: Washed REGION: Nyeri ELEVATION: 1900-2200 VARIETAL:  Batian, SL28, SL34, Ruiru11 CUP: Tree Tomato, Blackcurrant, Caramel Nyeri Hill Farm is located about 2 km northwest of Nyeri town, along the Nyeri–Ihururu road, around 300 km north of Nairobi. Sitting between 1,800 and 2,200 metres above sea level, the farm is surrounded by some of Kenya’s most beautiful landscapes: Mount Kenya to the northeast, Nyeri Hill to the west, and the Aberdare ridges to the northwest. The farm covers approximately 1,415 hectares, with around 344 hectares planted with coffee and more than 374,000 coffee trees. Its high altitude, cool climate, river valleys, and rich vegetation create an ideal environment for slow coffee development and strong cup complexity. Both the Chania and Muringato rivers pass through the farm, while natural vegetation and shade trees help support biodiversity and protect the land from erosion. Nyeri Hill Farm is owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri and has a long history in Kenyan coffee. Coffee was first planted here in 1914, making it one of the earliest coffee plantations established in East Africa. The wet mill was built in 1934 and is still operating today. Historically, it was used by the Consolata Fathers to process coffee for export to Italy. Beyond coffee, the farm has played an important role in the local community: income generated from coffee has supported the establishment of schools, seminaries, and a hospital over the past century, making Nyeri Hill a farm with both agricultural and social significance. During harvest, cherries are picked at peak ripeness and delivered directly to the wet mill. They are depulped, dry fermented to remove mucilage, washed with clean water, graded, and then dried on raised beds. This classic washed process helps preserve the clean acidity, structure, and vibrant fruit character that Kenyan coffees are famous for. Nyeri Hill is a historic Kenyan estate shaped by altitude, careful processing, biodiversity, and a deep connection to community.
