Description
Producer: Gititu washing station Location: Kiambu, Kenya Varieties: SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, Batian Processing: Washed Harvest: Dec-Jan 2025/26 Cup profile: a jammy, resinous cup with blackberry forest fruits, a hibiscus complexity and a mineral quality too A mix of SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, & Batian from Gititu, a collectively run washing station where members deliver their ripe cherries. Washed process, using cement tanks to ferment the depulped coffee for 16-18hrs, then dried on raised beds for 2 weeks, resulting in a jammy, resinous cup with blackberry forest fruits, a hibiscus complexity and a mineral quality too. __________________________________________ More about Gititu Gititu sits in Kiambu County, about 47 km northwest of Nairobi, on red volcanic soils that have supported coffee farming for generations. The factory processes coffee from smallholder farms (typically 1 to 2 hectares) using a single wash method: 12 to 24 hours of fermentation in cement tanks, a rinse, then straight to raised drying beds for 7-14 days. Lower yields this year mean cherry moves through the system faster, hitting the beds without backing up the entire operation. The region runs on two harvest cycles: the main crop from October through February, and a smaller fly crop in April and May. Education costs and urban migration have thinned the labour pool but recently, rising coffee prices have encouraged some younger farmers to stay, seeing possibility where there was only constraint before.
