Description

About This Single Origin  Kenya Gakuyu-ini AA (Single Origin Filter) ROAST:  Filter Roast PROCESS: Washed REGION: Kianyaga ELEVATION: 1600-1700 m.a.s.l VARIETAL:  Batian, SL28, SL34, Ruiru11 CUP: Finger Lime, Guava, Panela Gakuyu-ini Coffee Factory is located in Kirinyaga County, on the fertile southern slopes of Mount Kenya, near the towns of Kerugoya and Kianyaga. Built in 1982, the factory is affiliated with Thirikwa Farmers’ Cooperative Society and serves smallholder producers from the surrounding villages of Githiru, Gituba and Mukure. The producers contributing to this lot are small-scale farmers, often cultivating less than one hectare of land. Their farms may be small, but the level of attention is extremely high. Coffee is commonly grown alongside food crops, and farmers regularly apply compost and farmyard manure to maintain soil fertility. Inorganic fertiliser is used only when necessary throughout the year. Combined with Kirinyaga’s red volcanic soils, cool climate and high elevation, this careful approach helps create coffees with clarity, structure and vibrant fruit expression. Ripe cherries are delivered to Gakuyu-ini on the same day they are harvested. After sorting, the cherries are pulped using water from the nearby Kiri River, which is pumped into reservoir tanks and recirculated through the wet-processing system. The coffee is then fermented overnight, washed, soaked, and spread across raised drying tables. During drying, the parchment is frequently turned and carefully sorted to ensure even moisture reduction and consistent quality before being stored and delivered to the millers. This lot shows the classic energy we love from Kirinyaga: bright, clean and precise, but with enough sweetness to hold everything together. In the cup, we find the sharp citrus sparkle of finger lime, a soft tropical fruit character reminiscent of guava, and a deep panela-like sweetness that rounds out the finish. The acidity is lively and defined, the fruit is layered, and the sweetness carries through with a long, elegant structure. Gakuyu-ini represents the strength of smallholder Kenyan coffee: meticulous farming, disciplined washed processing and a terroir that naturally produces coffees with intensity, clarity and length. It is expressive without being heavy, bright without being thin, and sweet enough to keep the whole cup balanced.
